Induction meetings are necessary for new Team Members.  And we have a few other learning meetings throughout the year, as well as a few parties.

How do I join?

Simply by contacting Mike Tarlo on 3343 9673, who will arrange for you to meet over coffee with us soon after your call.  You will then be able to complete an application form, and we must ask you for permission to apply for a security clearance.  This is a lawful requirement of all volunteers working in Aged Care Homes, and usually takes a week or two.  You will then be invited to join one of our teams that is mutually suitable with your availability.

Get involved

Most of our men will tell you that being in the Circle of Men means that whatever you give in terms of your time or your care you stand to get double back.

Our Duty and Reward

The way we see it is that it is both our duty and pleasure to make our weekly visits in small teams to the Aged Care Homes we partner with, to enjoy fellowship with our elders there.  We become quite attached to them, and care very much about what is happening with them, and draw inspiration from the revered men that they are.   And we also benefit from the bonds that grow between us, the volunteers in the Circle of Men.  So while our elders gain much from our visits, so do we.

Our regular weekly meetings are held on weekdays and are normally between 1 & 2 hours in duration.  Times are pre-arranged with the men in each Aged Care Home, namely

  •             Wellington Park Nursing Home, Welllington Point

  •             Nandeebie (Bluecare) Centre of Care, Capalaba

  •             Rosevale Court, Victoria Point

  •             Prins Willem Alexander (Dutch) Village, Birkdale

  •             Adventist Retirement Village, Victoria Point

  •             Redlands Residential Care (Cleveland Hospital)

  •             Regis Grange, Wellington Point

There is a Team Facilitator and 1 or 2 Team Supporters in each team.  Team Facilitator’s are responsible for leading the meetings, and the Team Supporters assist him.  The teams often catch up with each other over coffee for a half hour after weekly meetings to debrief and enjoy.

The elders we visit often experience social isolation usually from their lack of mobility and being shut-in.  This brings loneliness, boredom, and often feelings of hopelessness, frustration and depression.   As well, they may well be grieving over the loss of their partner, their friends, or life as they knew it.  They often wish every day was Circle of Men day.  Our volunteering therefore is a commitment we honour.  If we don’t attend, it is possible our absence can be interpreted as a message that their lives are less important.   The same applies to our team colleagues - we depend upon each other for our own support.
